What happened
On August 24, 2019, a private flight operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) was conducting a landing at Herning Airport (EKHG) from Nørholm Gods. During the landing rollout on runway 09, the pilot experienced a sudden difficulty in maintaining directional control. The aircraft began to veer toward the right, and despite the pilot's attempts to correct the deviation, the plane started to fishtail.
While the aircraft was still traveling at a high speed, the rightward turn intensified, causing the left wingtip to make contact with the runway surface. The aircraft eventually came to a complete stop at the transition point between the asphalt runway and the safety area. The incident occurred during daylight hours under clear visual meteorological conditions, with the pilot noting a light southeasterly wind.
The investigation
The investigation, conducted by the Danish Accident Investigation Board, focused on the sequence of events leading to the contact between the wingtip and the ground. Investigators reviewed the pilot's report, conducted interviews, and examined photographic documentation of the scene. The examination confirmed that the left wing sustained substantial damage during the event.
Findings
- The aircraft involved was a Cessna 180J, registration OY-SIG.
- The incident resulted in no injuries to the pilot.
- The primary factor in the accident was the loss of directional control during the landing rollout, which led to the wing strike.
