What happened
On September 4, 2022, a private flight operating under visual flight rules (VFR) from Herning (EKHG) to Maribo (EKMB) was interrupted when the pilot noticed the aircraft's entrance door was not properly secured. To rectify this, the pilot decided to divert to Ejstrupholm airport.
Upon approaching Ejstrupholm, the pilot opted to land on runway 12 due to prevailing wind conditions. During the final approach, the aircraft encountered significant turbulence and strong wind gusts. Immediately after touchdown, a powerful gust caused the Piper PA28-151, registration OY-TOE, to veer sharply to the left. The pilot was unable to correct the deviation before the aircraft exited the left side of the runway at approximately 30 kilometers per hour, ultimately striking a thicket of bushes. There were no fatalities or serious injuries reported in the accident.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of events leading to the excursion from the runway. Investigators examined the meteorological conditions at nearby stations, including Billund and Karup, which indicated active winds and variable directions in the region. The physical damage to the aircraft was also documented, noting impacts to the left wing leading edge, both wingtips, and the right wheel arch.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was a strong wind gust immediately following touchdown.
- The aircraft's deviation from the runway centerline was driven by the sudden lateral force of the wind.
- The pilot's decision to divert to Ejstrupholm was prompted by an improperly secured cabin door.
- The aircraft sustained significant structural damage to the wing components and landing gear housing.
