What happened
On 22 August 2015, a Hawker Hunter T7, registration G-BXFI, was performing a scheduled manoeuvre during the Shoreham flying display. While executing a loop, the aircraft experienced a significant loss of energy. The pilot attempted to recover the aircraft by performing a manoeuvre intended to regain altitude; however, the aircraft failed to clear the ground and impacted the earth near the airfield.
The accident resulted in one fatality and several injuries to persons on the ground. The aircraft sustained substantial damage during the impact.
The investigation
Investigators examined the aircraft's flight path, engine performance, and the pilot's handling of the aircraft during the display. The investigation reviewed various data sources, including Air Traffic Control radar, action cameras, and smartphone footage from spectators.
Technical examinations focused on the aircraft's hydraulic and electrical systems, the pitot-static sensors, and the engine's Rolls-Royce Avon Mk 122 power plant. The investigation also scrutinized the maintenance records and the regulatory framework governing the operation of ex-military aircraft on the UK civil register under a 'Permit-to-Fly' status. Furthermore, the review looked into the safety management systems and the risk assessment processes used by the flying display organizers.
