What happened
On June 12, 2010, a private pilot arrived at the Weelde airfield to fly his personally owned Eiriavion PIK 20D, registration OO-YEB. After assembling the aircraft and performing pre-flight checks, the pilot initiated a winch launch at 12:15 UTC.
During the initial climb, the flight appeared normal with no lateral drift or speed irregularities. However, once the winch operator reached the release point and cut the power, the aircraft failed to maintain its flight path. Instead, the sailplane entered a steady, nose-down dive. Witnesses observed the aircraft descending in a steep trajectory, eventually crashing 310 meters from the winch station. The pilot attempted to evacuate the cockpit during the descent, as evidenced by the found canopy and unfastened safety belt, but the impact resulted in one fatality.
