What happened
On June 30, 2012, an Ultramagic N-300 hot air balloon was conducting a first flight with 12 passengers on board. After departing from a field near Lummen, the flight encountered abnormal wind gusts approximately 30 minutes into the journey, causing the balloon to drift eastward.
Observing turbulent conditions and seeing tents being shaken by wind on the ground, the pilot opted for an early landing. Upon reaching a corn field in Houthalen-Helchteren, the pilot activated the rapid deflation system. The basket struck the ground heavily and was dragged for several meters. A subsequent second impact occurred after the envelope was blown away by rising winds, causing the basket to nearly captivate and resulting in one passenger being ejected from the basket. The pilot and passengers sustained minor concussions.
The investigation
AAIU(Be) examined the flight path using data from a Garmin GPSmap 496 onboard the aircraft. The investigation reviewed meteorological reports from the Kleine-Brogel Air Base and Schaffen, as well as regional weather forecasts. The investigators analyzed radar imagery to determine the movement of rain showers and wind patterns in the Antwerp region during the time of the incident. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's experience, the aircraft's technical specifications, and the effectiveness of the pre-flight safety briefing and passenger positioning.
