What happened
A charter flight departed from Madrid-Barajas Airport at 00:20 local time, destined for Málaga. The aircraft, a twin engine plane, was carrying one pilot and three passengers at the time of the accident.
During the descent from 8,000 feet, the flight crew received clearance to begin a visual approach toward Runway 14 at Málaga-Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport. While the aircraft was approximately 12 nautical miles north of the Málaga VOR and had descended below 3,000 feet, the pilot began a left-hand turn. During this maneuver, the aircraft collided with the slope of an 850-meter high rocky mountain situated near Villanueva del Rosario.
The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate. All four fatalities were recorded, as there were no survivors among the crew or passengers. Search efforts located the wreckage a short distance below the mountain summit.
Findings
At the time of the collision, meteorological conditions were characterized by good visibility and sparse cloud cover, with cloud layers between 1,800 feet and 1,400 feet (1-4 octas). The accident occurred while the aircraft was performing a turn during the visual approach phase.
