Aircraft accident during engine failure simulation near Reims-Prunay Airport

2 fatalities • Reims-Prunay, France • Landing (descent or approach)

A twin-engine aircraft crashed in an open field during a training maneuver involving a simulated engine failure near Reims-Prunay Airport.

What happened

On the afternoon of the accident, a twin engine aircraft departed from Paris-Le Bourget Airport, bound for Reims-Champagne Airport. The flight was being operated with a crew of two pilots, which included an instructor and a student pilot undergoing a transition program.

While the aircraft was descending through 2,000 feet toward Reims-Prunay Airport, the crew notified air traffic control of their intention to perform a specific training exercise. This maneuver was designed to simulate a go-around procedure following an engine failure.

As the aircraft was positioned on a left downwind approach for runway 25, the crew initiated the simulated emergency. During this process, the aircraft experienced a left roll and a loss of altitude. The plane subsequently struck an open field located approximately 425 metres before the threshold of runway 25. The impact resulted in a post-crash fire. There were two fatalities resulting from the accident.

Findings

During the execution of the training maneuver, the aircraft rolled to the left and lost necessary altitude, leading to the impact in the field.

Probable cause

The aircraft lost altitude and rolled during a simulated engine failure maneuver during a go-around procedure.
