What happened
On September 28, 2006, at 10:33 local time, a collision occurred on taxiway "S" at Munich Airport. A Boeing 737-600 was taxiing toward runway 26L, having turned from taxiway "S" onto "B14". The pilot of the 737 brought the aircraft to a stop in the turn because two other aircraft were already waiting at the holding point for runway 26L.
Simultaneously, an Airbus A300-B4 was taxiing on taxiway "S" toward taxiway "B15". As the A300 passed the stationary 737, the right wingtip of the A300 made contact with the left horizontal stabilizer of the 737. There were no injuries to the crews of either aircraft.
The investigation
The BFU examined the sequence of events using available radio communications and airport surface radar records. The investigation also included the analysis of flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders from both the Airbus A300-B4 and the Boeing 737-600. The investigators also reviewed the flight crew credentials, noting that all crew members involved held valid licenses and medical certificates, and the 737 pilots possessed extensive flight experience.
Findings
Both aircraft sustained minor damage. The 737 experienced slight indentation on the exterior of its left horizontal stabilizer, while the A300 sustained an 80 cm pressure mark on the outer leading edge of its right wing. The collision was caused by the A300 passing a stationary aircraft in a confined taxiway area during operations.
