What happened
On April 26, 2008, during an aviation event at the Eisenach-Kindel airfield, a LET Z-37A aircraft was performing a takeoff roll intended for a water-dropping demonstration. During the takeoff run, the aircraft deviated from the runway centerline. Video evidence and witness accounts indicated that the aircraft initially drifted left before pivoting right, eventually leaving the runway surface.
As the aircraft moved onto the grass, it lifted off all three wheels and entered an aerodynamically overstressed state. The aircraft remained airborne for several short intervals before colliding with a pavilion, a sales stall, and two fairground rides. The impact caused the destruction of the aircraft and significant damage to the event infrastructure.
The accident resulted in two fatalities among bystanders, four serious injuries (including the pilot), and 14 minor injuries.
The investigation
The BFU investigation focused on the sequence of events during the takeoff roll and the operational oversight of the event. Investigators examined the aircraft's trim settings, the pilot's experience, and the adherence to pre-flight procedures. The investigation also reviewed the event's authorization process and the competence of the event management.
Key elements examined included the pilot's flight logs, the use of checklists, and the physical state of the aircraft's elevator trim. Furthermore, the BFU scrutinized the regulatory oversight provided by the Thuringian Ministry and the adequacy of the safety controls implemented by the event organizer.
