Fatal glider accident during winch launch at Hütten-Hotzenwald

Casualties unknown • Segelfluggelände Hütten-Hotzenwald, DE

A pilot was killed when a Schempp-Hirth Ventus cT entered a spiral dive immediately after releasing from a winch tow at a German glider airfield.

What happened

On June 26, 2011, a single-seat motor glider, a Schemop-Hirth Ventus cT, was performing a local flight at the Hütten-Hotzenwald glider airfield. The pilot had previously completed two winch launches in the same aircraft using runway 11. The third launch, initiated from runway 29, appeared normal according to eyewitness accounts and amateur video footage until the moment the winch cable was released.

Following the release of the cable, the aircraft maintained a steady climb for approximately four seconds. Immediately thereafter, the aircraft pitched forward. After an additional four seconds, the glider entered a spiral dive over the right wing. Within approximately six seconds, or after roughly one and a half rotations, the aircraft struck the ground. The impact resulted in the death of the pilot and the total destruction of the aircraft.

The investigation

The BFU investigation examined the aircraft, the flight data from a GPS device, and various forms of evidence, including amateur video and eyewitness testimony. The investigation also included a post-mortem examination of the pilot. The aircraft, which was operated by a flying club, was found to have its retractable engine retracted, with approximately 11 liters of fuel remaining on board. No water ballast was being carried at the time of the accident.

Findings

  • The aircraft's cockpit area was destroyed, and the fuselage and wings suffered multiple fractures upon impact.
  • The post-mortem examination of the pilot revealed severe coronary artery calcification, indicating repeated episodes of myocardial ischemia (oxygen deprivation to the heart).
  • Weather conditions at the time of the accident were favorable, with clear skies and visibility suitable for VFR flight.

Probable cause

The investigation identified severe coronary artery calcification in the pilot, which caused repeated instances of oxygen deprivation to the heart, as a significant factor in the accident.
