What happened
On November 18, 2012, a Tecnam P 2006 T departed Pfullendorf for Biberach a. d. Riß to undergo a scheduled annual inspection. At approximately 13:55 local time, the pilot contacted the Biberach tower to announce the intention to land.
During the approach, witnesses observed the aircraft emerging from fog at a very low altitude. Radar data and eyewitness accounts indicate that the pilot was likely flying in marginal visibility conditions. The aircraft initially approached Runway 04 offset to the right. The pilot appeared to be searching for the runway, performing a left-hand turn and subsequent full circles. During these maneuvers, the aircraft crossed the approach centerline to the right and then to the left.
After attempting a corrective maneuver in a climbing turn to the right, the aircraft pitched forward, struck the ground, and overturned. The impact resulted in one fatality and the total destruction of the aircraft.
The investigation
The BFU investigation reconstructed the flight path using radar data and analyzed witness statements from the tower and surrounding area. The investigation examined the aircraft's technical condition, the pilot's qualifications, and the meteorological conditions at the time of the accident.
Physical examination of the wreckage revealed significant structural damage, including torn winglets, deformed wings, and a broken engine mount. The cockpit instruments were displaced, and the trim was found in a nose-heavy position. No technical defects were found in the aircraft, and the weight and balance were within limits. An autopsy of the pilot revealed no pre-existing medical conditions that would have contributed to the accident.
