What happened
On 27 August 2004, a Bolkow BO-207, registration D-EHYX, was performing a private flight when it crashed at Coetir Bach Farm, near Llanelli. While the pilot was on short final approach to Runway 16, a wasp entered the cockpit through a loose-fitting t-shirt and stung the pilot on the right side of his abdomen.
In the ensuing struggle to remove the insect, the pilot's control of the aircraft was compromised, leading to a late touchdown on the runway. Following the landing, the pilot attempted to execute a go-around. However, during this maneuver, the helicopter failed to clear a hedge located at the end of the runway. The undercarriage made contact with the hedge, causing the aircraft to flip onto its back in a nearby field. The pilot escaped through a shattered window and sustained no injuries.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. Investigators examined the sequence of events leading to the impact with the hedge and the circumstances surrounding the pilot's distraction during the approach phase.
