What happened
On the afternoon of the incident, a flight operated by Jetport Inc. was traveling from Hamilton, Ontario, to Fox Harbour, Nova Scotia. The aircraft was carrying a total of ten people, consisting of two crew members and eight passengers. During the landing phase at the Fox Harbour aerodrome, the aircraft touched down approximately seven feet before the threshold of Runway 33.
Upon impact with the edge of the runway, the main landing gear sustained damage. This was followed by the collapse of the right main landing gear, which caused the pilot to lose directional control of the aircraft. The plane subsequently veered off the right side of the runway and traveled until it came to a halt 1000 feet away from the original touchdown location. Following the excursion, all occupants were able to evacuate the plane. The incident resulted in two serious injuries (one crew member and one passenger) and eight minor injuries among the remaining occupants. The aircraft itself incurred major structural damage.
Findings
- The aircraft's descent resulted in a touchdown short of the runway pavement.
- The collapse of the right main landing gear led to the loss of directional control and the subsequent runway excursion.
