Passenger injured in hot air balloon landing accident in Derbyshire

Casualties unknown • Pearson Farm, Cromford, Derbyshire, GB

A commercial hot air balloon flight ended in a rapid descent and impact with a stone wall, resulting in one serious injury.

What happened

On 24 August 2011, a Cameron Z-275 hot air balloon, registration G-CBZZ, was conducting a commercial passenger flight near Cromford, Derbyshire. After an initial climb to 1,500 feet to assess local wind conditions, the pilot found wind speeds within the permitted operational limits. However, as the flight progressed, wind speeds increased significantly.

While approaching a large grass field for landing, the wind speed rose to approximately 17 mph. During the final stages of the approach, a sudden gust caused the balloon to enter a rapid descent. The pilot attempted to use all three burners to arrest the descent and execute a go-around, but the downward momentum continued. The basket struck a fence and then a stone wall roughly 25 metres before the intended landing spot. The impact caused the basket to tip onto its side and slide for about 50 metres across the field.

Among the 11 passengers on board, one female passenger sustained serious injuries, specifically breaking both legs. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries. The pilot and the remaining passengers were uninjured.

The investigation

The investigation examined the weather conditions, the pilot's actions, and the aircraft's impact with ground obstacles. It was noted that the pilot had checked the forecast prior to departure and had followed the operator's manual regarding wind speed limits. The investigation also reviewed the passenger briefing process, noting that while the pilot had demonstrated the required landing position, the physical nature of such landings can be unpredictable.

Findings

  • The primary cause of the accident was a large gust of wind during the final approach which triggered a rapid rate of descent.
  • The basket made contact with a fence and a stone wall prior to reaching the intended landing area.
  • The passenger's injuries were exacerbated by her position in the basket at the moment of impact with the wall.

Safety action

Following a previous safety recommendation regarding passenger awareness of the physical nature of balloon landings, the Civil Aviation Authority issued Safety Notice SN-2011/018 to address balloon operations safety.

Probable cause

A sudden wind gust during the final approach to the landing site caused the balloon to descend rapidly, leading to an impact with a fence and a stone wall.
