Engine fire and subsequent power loss leading to crash near Málaga

4 fatalities • Málaga, Spain • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft flying from Melilla crashed short of the runway at Málaga-Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport following an engine fire and total loss of engine power.

What happened

During a routine flight departing from Melilla, the flight crew received instructions to descend toward Málaga-Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport. As the aircraft was performing its final approach to runway 32, the cockpit instrumentation indicated an active fire in the left engine. Upon noticing the engine fire warning light, the co-pilot notified air traffic control and declared an emergency situation.

While the aircraft was on short final approach, both engines ceased functioning. This sudden loss of propulsion caused the aircraft to enter a stall. The plane impacted the ground approximately 538 metres before reaching the runway threshold, eventually coming to a stop against a motorway embankment. The impact resulted in the destruction of the aircraft.
