What happened
On September 11, 2014, at approximately 20:40 UTC, an Austral Airlines Embraer ERJ-190, registration LV-CIF, was on final approach to runway 19 at Carrasco International Airport (SUMU) in Uruguay. The aircraft was performing an ILS approach under Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC).
As the aircraft passed the MIDUN waypoint and approached the threshold of runway 19, the flight crew observed a Uruguayan Air Force Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter positioned near the intended landing point. The helicopter was conducting training maneuvers within the authorized "Delta" area, located between taxiways C and F.
Upon identifying the obstacle on the runway, the pilot initiated an evasive maneuver by banking to the right to avoid a collision. Following the go-around, the crew performed a visual circuit to the right and subsequently landed on runway 19 without further incident. There were no injuries to persons and no damage to the aircraft or infrastructure.
