What happened
During a flight intended for a scheduled stop, the pilot received a radio notification regarding unfavorable weather conditions near the intended destination. Upon reaching the destination, the pilot attempted to contact Flight Service via telephone to obtain a weather briefing and submit a flight plan, but these attempts were unsuccessful. Consequently, the pilot proceeded to depart without a filed flight plan.
Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft encountered worsening meteorological conditions, characterized by low ceilings and significant turbulence. In response to these conditions, the pilot initiated a maneuver to return to the departure airfield. During this phase of flight, the aircraft struck trees at the accident site.
Findings
An investigation into the wreckage revealed no evidence of mechanical failure or component malfunction. The pilot also provided no reports of any technical issues prior to the accident. Data regarding the local geography indicates that while the elevation at the departure airport was roughly 24 feet, the terrain at the location of the impact was approximately 2,500 feet. The primary factor in the accident was the encounter with deteriorating weather conditions during the return maneuver.
