What happened
During a flight departing from Lanseria Airport's Runway 07 toward Bazaruto Island, Mozambique, the pilot experienced mechanical issues with the engine. Following the malfunction, the pilot notified Air Traffic Control and received authorization to perform an immediate return to the airport for an emergency landing on runway 25.
As the aircraft was on short final approach, it struck the perimeter fence. The impact caused the Cessna 402B to crash in the vicinity of the runway threshold, subsequently resulting in a post-crash fire that destroyed the airframe. There were three injuries reported among the occupants, but no fatalities occurred.
Findings
The aircraft, a 1975 model, had been modified from its original twin-engine configuration into a single-engine setup known as a DMI Falcon 402, featuring a new turbo engine. The primary factor in the accident was the engine failure encountered shortly after takeoff.
