Engine failure leads to nose gear collapse and capsize of Cessna 152 in Ica

Casualties unknown • PE

A flight training aircraft experienced multiple engine failures during takeoff, resulting in an emergency landing and aircraft capsize at Las Dunas Aerodrome.

What happened

On May 14, 2015, a Cessna C-152, registration OB-1901, operated by Escuela de Aviación Civil Jorge Chavez, departed from Las Dunas Aerodrome (SPLH) in Ica, Peru, for a flight training mission. At approximately 15:20 local time, while maintaining an altitude of 3,400 feet, the engine RPM began to decrease, leading to a total engine failure.

The instructor pilot attempted in-flight restart procedures. The engine briefly responded, reaching 1,400 RPM, before failing again. A second restart attempt was also unsuccessful. Following the loss of power, the instructor pilot declared an emergency and executed an emergency landing in a nearby field of crops. Upon contact with the soft, recently cultivated soil, the nose gear sank into the ground, causing the aircraft to capsize onto its back. The two crew members on board sustained no injuries and were able to egress the aircraft without difficulty.

The investigation

The Peruvian Aviation Accident Investigation Commission (CIAA) initiated an investigation and deployed investigators to the site to conduct field inquiries. The investigation involves reviewing information provided by the operator, examining records from the DGAC library, and analyzing evidence recovered from the accident site. As of the provisional report, the technical analysis and final report are still in progress.

Probable cause

The engine experienced a loss of power and failed to restart during flight, necessitating an emergency landing on soft terrain which caused the nose gear to sink and the aircraft to capsize.
