What happened
On April 19, 2016, at approximately 14:22 UTC, an Antonov AN-32B, registration OB-1907-P, operated by Aero Transporte S.A., was conducting a commercial cargo flight from Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.
While the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of approximately 25,000 feet, roughly 70 nautical miles from Cusco, the crew had completed their descent checklists when the number two engine suddenly failed and the propeller feathered. The crew immediately implemented emergency procedures for single-engine operations and declared an emergency with air traffic control.
Following the declaration, the tower granted the aircraft landing priority. The crew successfully completed the approach and landed the aircraft without further incident. Although the airport's Firefighting Service (SEI) was activated as a precaution, no fire was detected. There were no injuries to the three crew members, and the aircraft sustained no structural damage.
The investigation
The CIAA initiated an investigation and deployed investigators to the field immediately following the event. The investigation involves coordination with the National Bureau Air Accidents Investigation of Civil Aircraft (NBAAI) of Ukraine and the aircraft manufacturer, Antonov.
Flight recorder data was analyzed in laboratories operated by the Ukrainian NBAAI. The investigation is currently ongoing, pending the disassembly and technical examination of the affected engine by the manufacturer or accredited representatives. The report notes that the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine has impacted the pace of the engine teardown process.
