What happened
On January 8, 2021, a Cessna T303, registration HK3856G, was operating a private VFR flight from Flandes (SKGI) to Guaymaral (SKGY). After departing Flandes at 12:57 HL, the pilot proceeded along the planned route via Tocaima. At 18:09 UTC, the pilot contacted Bogotá Information to update his position and confirm the QNH. Following this communication, the pilot failed to report his arrival over Bojacá as instructed.
As the aircraft approached the Bojacá-Tenjo corridor, it encountered deteriorating weather characterized by convective activity, including clouds and fog, which significantly reduced visibility. The aircraft subsequently struck a mountainside in the Vereda La Cubia area. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft and one fatality.
The investigation
The GRIAA investigation established that the aircraft was airworthy, with all maintenance and weight and balance documentation up to date. The pilot was found to be physically and mentally fit for the flight.
Investigators determined that while the flight was planned under VFR, the aircraft entered IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) due to the weather conditions in the area. The investigation focused on the pilot's decision-making process and situational awareness as the aircraft transitioned from visual to instrument conditions while navigating mountainous terrain.
