What happened
On October 5, 2013, a Piper PA22-108 Colt, registration CX-AVQ, was taxiing from the Aeroclub de Carmelo platform toward the airport runway. Approximately 10 meters from the start of the taxiway, the right main landing gear inadvertently entered a hole located on the side strip. This caused the right wing to drop suddenly. Although the pilot immediately shut down the engine, the propeller struck the ground.
The incident occurred during daylight hours under clear skies and light northeast winds. The pilot, who was the sole occupant and held valid medical and pilot certifications, exited the aircraft uninjured.
The investigation
The CIAIA investigation established that the aircraft was airworthy with a valid Certificate of Airworthiness and insurance at the time of the event. The investigation noted that the aircraft's fuselage was cushioned by recently mown grass, which likely mitigated further impact. The investigation also confirmed that there was no fire and no damage to third parties.
Damage to the Piper PA22-108 Colt included a dent and fabric tearing on the right wing tip, as well as a bent propeller blade and nicks on the other blade.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was the right main gear entering a hole on the side strip during taxiing.
- The sudden drop of the right wing led to the propeller striking the ground despite the pilot's rapid engine shutdown.
