What happened
On July 30, 2018, at approximately 17:50 local time, a Bombardier CL 200, registration CX-LVA, operated by Amaslonas Uruguay, arrived at Carrasco International Airport (SUMU) from Salto (SABE). The aircraft was operating flight 757 with a total of 3 crew members and 10 passengers on board.
After the aircraft had landed and parked at position 29, the disembarkation process began. During the descent, the second passenger to exit the aircraft tripped on the first step of the airstair. The passenger fell, striking their back against the edge of the steps before sliding to the ground. While bystanders attempted to assist the passenger, the individual reported intense pain, prompting a call for airport medical services.
Airport security footage confirmed the aircraft landed at 17:45, with disembarkation starting at 17:52. The fall occurred at 17:53. Medical personnel arrived at the aircraft at 18:07 and requested an ambulance. The passenger was eventually moved via stretcher to a passenger bus at 18:23, and the ambulance arrived at the bus location at 18:30. The passenger was transported to the Hospital Británico at 19:15.
The investigation
The CIAIA examined the condition of the aircraft's main entrance door and the integrated airstair, finding all components to be in perfect operational condition. The investigation also reviewed the capabilities of the airport's medical station, confirming it was equipped with necessary emergency gear, including collars and stretchers.
The passenger was noted to be wearing high-heeled shoes and carrying a handbag in the right hand, which prevented them from using both hands to grip the handrails.
Findings
