What happened
On June 26, 2005, at approximately 13:30 local time, a Schleicher ASW 20L glider, registration D-3178, was engaged in a recreational flight originating from Belluno Airport (LIDB). After initially soaring along the ridges toward Feltre, the pilot observed developing stratocumulus clouds and decided to return toward Belluno to reassess the weather.
While navigating near Colle Fiorito, the pilot received radio reports from other pilots indicating that soaring conditions to the northeast of the airfield had become unfavorable due to a lack of thermal activity. Realizing that a safe return to the airport was no longer viable, the pilot attempted an off-field landing in a series of fields west of Colle Fiorito. During the approach, while flying at approximately 130 km/lag, the glider encountered a strong downdraft while passing over a wooded area. The aircraft struck the treetops, which caused the wings to detach from the fuselage. The dense vegetation subsequently brought the glider to a complete stop.
The investigation
The ANSV investigation examined the flight sequence, the meteorological conditions, and the pilot's decision-making process. The investigation established that the pilot was flying with a valid license and medical certificate. The aircraft, a 15-meter class glider, was airworthy and had undergone its last inspection 80 flight hours prior to the event.
Investigators analyzed the weather patterns, noting that while initial conditions were favorable for soaring, the arrival of cloud cover and the lack of thermal lift necessitated a change in flight plan. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's attempt to avoid populated areas by selecting an off-field landing site, despite the risks involved in flying near the forest canopy.
