Glider crashes into industrial building during emergency landing attempt

Casualties unknown • Località Pradalunga (BG), IT

A solo training flight ended in a heavy impact after a pilot, unable to maintain altitude, struck a warehouse roof and a street lamp in Pradalunga, Italy.

What happened

On April 6, 2009, a Discus B glider, registration D-4091, was conducting a solo training flight originating from Valbrembo. After flying toward Edolo, the pilot and a second glider decided to return due to increasing cloud cover. While navigating the valley, the pilot of D-4091 attempted to gain altitude near Monte Misma but found himself in a continuous descent.

As the aircraft's altitude dropped to approximately 900 meters, the pilot was forced to attempt an off-field landing. During the search for a suitable landing site, the pilot bypassed a local football field due to high fencing and headed toward the Serio River. While deploying the landing gear, the glider struck the roof of an industrial warehouse and subsequently hit a street lamp on Via Crespi. The impact resulted in one injury (the pilot, who sustained fractures) and significant damage to the aircraft, including a broken tail boom and severe cockpit damage.

The investigation

The ANSV investigation analyzed flight data (IGC files) and interviewed the pilot. The investigation established that the aircraft was airworthy and the pilot held a valid license. Meteorological data confirmed favorable conditions at takeoff, but worsening weather necessitated the change in route.

Analysis of the flight path revealed that the pilot had been losing altitude for approximately 25 minutes. While the pilot's glide efficiency was sufficient to reach the home airport at Valbrembo, the investigation found that the pilot failed to properly manage the descent. The investigation also noted that the pilot had never undergone specific practical training for off-field landings, having only experienced landing on non-airport surfaces in much more controlled circumstances.

Findings

  • The primary cause was the collision with ground obstacles during an attempt to land in an unsuitable area.
  • Inadequate flight re-planning following the deterioration of weather conditions.
  • Failure to properly consider the glider's glide cone (safety cone) to determine the maximum reachable distance.
  • Inadequate practical training regarding the management of off-field landings.
  • A loss of situational awareness and decision-making capability during the final stages of the flight, likely driven by the psychological pressure of the low altitude.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the glider striking a building and a street lamp during an emergency landing attempt, precipitated by the pilot's inability to maintain altitude and a failure to properly calculate the aircraft's glide range.
