What happened
On a flight traveling from Toronto-Lester B. Pearson International Airport to Toronto-Buttonville Municipal Airport, Ontario, an aircraft was cleared by air traffic control to perform a contact approach for Runway 33. During the maneuver, the aircraft drifted past the runway centerline while executing a left turn toward the final approach. In an attempt to correct the flight path, the pilot performed a sharp right turn to realign with the runway heading.
The aircraft made contact with the pavement just past the runway threshold markings. Upon landing, the plane drifted off the right side of the runway, traversing the infield and crossing taxiway Bravo. During this excursion, the aircraft struck a runway and taxiway identification sign. The aircraft stopped in the infield area located before Runway 21/03. The impact did not cause the landing gear to fail, and the aircraft remained in an upright position. No fire was reported following the event.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
- There were 0 fatalities and 0 injuries among the two crew members on board.
- The excursion was caused by the pilot's attempt to compensate for overshooting the centerline with a tight turn.
