Aircraft overrun at Kiel-Holtenau Airport following in-flight smoke

No fatalities • Kiel-Holtenau, Germany • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft flying from Moscow to Luton overran the runway at Kiel-Holtenau Airport after an emergency diversion due to smoke in the cabin.

What happened

During a flight traveling from Moscow-Domodedovo to Luton, the crew encountered smoke that began spreading through both the cockpit and the passenger cabin. While cruising over German airspace, the flight crew declared an emergency situation. In response to the developing smoke, air traffic control authorized a diversion to Kiel-Holtenau Airport.

The aircraft arrived at the airport during nighttime operations. The landing was performed on runway 26, which has a total length of 1,265 metres. Following the touchdown, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently to remain on the paved surface. The plane overran the end of the runway and eventually came to a stop in a nearby ravine.

Despite the impact, all 6 occupants of the aircraft successfully evacuated the wreckage. No injuries were reported among the crew or passengers. However, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Findings

  • The emergency diversion was prompted by smoke infiltration into the cockpit and cabin areas.
  • The aircraft was unable to stop within the remaining runway distance after landing.

Probable cause

The aircraft overran the runway following an emergency landing necessitated by smoke in the cabin.
