What happened
A cargo flight departing from Manta-Eloy Alfaro Airport for San Pablo experienced significant mechanical issues during its transit. The aircraft, which was transporting 70 boxes of shrimp larvae along with two pilots and one passenger, began experiencing power fluctuations in the right engine while cruising at 5,000 feet. In an attempt to stabilize the engine, the instructor pilot engaged the auxiliary fuel pump and adjusted the fuel mixture, but these actions failed to resolve the instability.
As the flight progressed to the final approach phase at San Pablo, the right engine ceased functioning entirely. The crew proceeded with the landing using only one engine. Due to the loss of power, the aircraft performed a high approach and touched down approximately 292 metres beyond the runway threshold. The aircraft then bounced and settled an additional six metres further down the runway.
Recognizing that the remaining runway length was inadequate for a safe stop, the instructor pilot attempted a go-around. During this climb, the aircraft reached an altitude of roughly 20 metres before striking the ground. The impact occurred 26 metres past the runway end and 140 metres to the right of the runway centerline. The accident resulted in one fatality and two serious injuries.
Findings
- The right engine experienced persistent power fluctuations and eventual failure during the approach.
- The decision to execute a go-around with insufficient runway remaining led to the subsequent ground impact.
