What happened
On 17 July 2005, a Druine D.31A Turbulent, registration G-ARLZ, was participating in a private flight from Exeter to Taw Mill, Devon, to attend a fly-in event. The pilot initiated a left base join for the 500-metre grass runway 17, which featured a tailwind component.
During the final approach, the pilot attempted to flare the aircraft. During this maneuver, the airspeed decreased abruptly, leading to a heavy touchdown. Following the impact, the aircraft entered a rapid deceleration and slid along the ground, resulting in a ground loop. The pilot exited the open cockpit without injury.
The investigation
Investigators examined the damage sustained by the aircraft, which included extensive damage to the wing spar, propeller, and both main landing gear assemblies. The investigation also considered the environmental conditions and the pilot's approach technique. The pilot had previously landed at Taw Mill and was aware of local advice regarding the 100 ft upslope at the runway threshold, which suggests landing uphill when facing a tailwind. The investigation noted that the pilot's airspeed decayed significantly during the flare phase of the landing.
Findings
- The aircraft suffered significant structural damage to the landing gear, propeller, and wing spar.
- The rapid decay of airspeed during the flare caused the aircraft to land heavily and subsequently lose control on the ground.
- The pilot was uninjured in the accident.
