What happened
On 9 May 1998, an Evans VP-1 Series 2, registration G-BGLF, was performing a private local flight near Cowbit, Lincolnshire. Following a 25-minute period of flight, the pilot attempted to land on the grass runway 27.
At the time of the landing, the wind conditions had shifted from a westerly direction to a south-westerly direction, with speeds recorded between 10 and 12 knots and intermittent gusts. While the pilot reported that the initial touchdown on the grass surface was normal, the aircraft subsequently veered toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft eventually came to a stop while straddling a dyke that runs parallel to the left edge of the runway.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. Investigators examined the environmental conditions and the aircraft's movement following touchdown. The inspection of the aircraft revealed damage to the left wing and the landing gear.
