What happened
On 12 September 1999, a Gardan GY80-180, registration G-AVRS, was performing a private flight when it encountered difficulties during the landing phase at Moorsholm Farm strip. The weather conditions were clear with no significant wind and a temperature of 20°C. The grass runway had been recently maintained, leaving clippings on the dry surface.
During the approach to Runway 20, the aircraft experienced a prolonged float before making contact with the ground approximately halfway down the strip. Believing there was enough runway remaining to stop, the pilot attempted to use the brakes; however, the wheels skidded on the surface. In an effort to avoid an overrun, the pilot initiated a go-around by applying full power. Unfortunately, the aircraft lacked the necessary distance to regain flight, resulting in the plane striking a hedge at the end of the strip and coming to a halt.
There were no injuries to the two occupants on board, though the aircraft sustained damage including a buckled wing spar and fuselage damage.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot and subsequent telephone enquiries. Investigators examined the runway conditions, noting the presence of grass clippings on the dry, recently cut surface. The pilot's decision-making process regarding the aborted landing was also reviewed.
