What happened
On a flight operated by Airwave, a G-159 Gulfstream I, registered as G-159, was conducting an instrument flight rules (IFR) approach from Toronto (YYZ) toward Montreal-Dorval (YUL). While positioned on final approach for runway 06R, the flight crew identified an issue regarding the deployment of the landing gear.
In an attempt to rectify the situation, the crew attempted to recycle the gear and executed the standard emergency extension protocols. They also performed several flight maneuvers intended to assist the gear in locking into place, but these efforts failed to resolve the malfunction. Due to the ongoing technical difficulties, the aircraft remained in the vicinity of Montreal until the fuel levels reached a critical minimum. At this point, an emergency was declared.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft drifted toward the left side of the runway and eventually stopped approximately 60 feet away from the paved surface. While the two pilots managed to exit the aircraft without injuries, the G-159 Gulfstream I sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The crew was unable to successfully deploy the landing gear through standard or emergency procedures.
- The failure of the landing gear to extend properly necessitated an emergency landing due to fuel constraints.
