What happened
On 11 March 2009, a Hawker Hurricane 2B, registration G-HHII, experienced an issue during landing at North Weald Airfield, Essex. The pilot reported that the aircraft's brakes had become partially applied prior to the completion of the landing sequence.
The investigation
Following the initial report, the braking system underwent a comprehensive inspection. As part of the troubleshooting process, the maintenance organisation removed the dual relay valve from the aircraft to undergo independent testing. Extensive checks were performed on the braking system to locate the source of the unintended application.
Findings
Testing of the dual relay valve yielded no detectable faults. Despite these detailed examinations and subsequent testing, investigators were unable to identify the specific cause of the reported partial brake application. Since the period of investigation, the aircraft has completed several hours of flight time without any recurrence of the braking issue.
