What happened
On December 20, 2009, an Aero Boero AB-115, registration PP-GMI, was performing a solo flight for training purposes at the Blumenau Aerodrome in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The pilot, a student undergoing Private Pilot (PPL) training, was conducting a solo flight specifically for touch-and-go maneuvers.
The flight began following a successful 30-minute instructional session earlier that day, where the student had demonstrated satisfactory control. The solo flight was scheduled for the afternoon to take advantage of favorable wind and temperature conditions. The landing itself was initially successful, with the aircraft aligned with the runway centerline and a smooth touchdown. However, during the subsequent landing roll, the aircraft experienced a loss of directional control and veered off the left side of runway 36, eventually striking an obstacle (pilonar) on the runway strip.
The investigation
CENIPA investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the excursion, noting that the student was properly authorized by a qualified instructor to fly solo. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held valid medical and technical certifications, and the aircraft maintained a valid airworthiness certificate. The aircraft was also within proper weight and balance limits.
While the student had performed well in the most recent flight with an instructor, the investigation revealed that in previous training sessions, the student had struggled with aircraft control on the ground following landings and go-arounds. The investigation focused on the operational execution of the landing roll.
