What happened
On March 16, 2014, at 17:00 UTC, a Cessna 172RG, registration PT-MDA, was performing a repositioning flight from Resende Aerodrome (SDRS) to Valença Aer and (SDVL). The flight was being operated for private purposes with one pilot and one passenger on board.
During the landing sequence at SDVL, the pilot failed to extend the landing gear. As a result, the aircraft performed a belly landing, sliding along the runway before veering gently to the right. The aircraft remained within the runway boundaries. The impact caused substantial damage to the engine and propeller, along with superficial damage to the elevator tip, the right wing, and the lower cowling. The pilot and passenger were both uninjured.
The investigation
CENIPA's investigation, conducted by SERIPA III, reviewed the factual circumstances of the landing. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held valid medical and technical certifications, and that the aircraft's airworthiness and registration certificates were up to date. Following an analysis of photographic evidence provided by the scene, investigators authorized the movement of the aircraft to a hangar.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was the pilot's failure to extend the landing gear during the approach procedures.
