What happened
On September 13, 2013, an Aero Boero AB-115, registration PP-GBC, was taxiing at the Maringá Aerodrome (SBMG) in Paraná, Brazil, for a scheduled private pilot flight instruction session. While performing a 45-degree right turn to align with runway 10, the student pilot attempted to reduce the aircraft's speed by applying the brakes. This braking action caused the aircraft's tail to lift, resulting in the propeller striking the ground. Following the impact, the tail dropped, causing the tailwheel to break.
The investigation
CENIPA's investigation focused on the sequence of maneuvers during the taxi phase. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft was within weight and balance limits and that all maintenance logs for the airframe, engine, and propeller were up to date. The aircraft's airworthiness certificate was valid. The crew consisted of an instructor with 1,320 total flight hours (380 in the model) and a student with only 3 total flight hours. Both pilots held valid medical certificates, and the instructor held a valid technical certificate.
Findings
- Improper application of controls during the braking maneuver.
- Lack of pilot experience regarding the aircraft's handling characteristics during taxiing.
- The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the engine, propeller, tailwheel, and rudder.
