What happened
On September 9, 2010, an Embraer EMB-810C, registration PT-RFY, was performing a private transport flight from Maringá, PR, to Palmas, PR. The flight was carrying a pilot and one passenger.
While on the downwind leg of runway 20 at Palmas Aerodrome (SSPS), the pilot began configuring the aircraft for landing and noticed that the down-lock indicator light for the right landing gear was extinguished. After several unsuccessful attempts to extend the right gear using standard procedures, the pilot utilized the emergency extension system to complete the landing.
Following touchdown, the right landing gear inadvertently retracted. This caused the aircraft to veer off the right side of the runway. The aircraft sustained light damage, but both occupants were uninjured.
The investigation
The investigation confirmed that the pilot was properly licensed, qualified, and held valid instrument and multi-engine ratings. The aircraft's airworthiness certificate was valid, and all maintenance records for the airframe, engines, and propellers were up to date. The aircraft was also operating within its approved weight and balance limits. Meteorological conditions at the time of the occurrence were favorable for flight.
Findings
- The right landing gear failed to lock in the down position during the approach.
- The pilot performed the landing with the right gear down-lock indication light extinguished.
- The right landing gear retracted unexpectedly after the aircraft touched down, leading to the runway excursion.
