What happened
On December 15, 2008, an EMB-810C aircraft, registration PT-EEU, was performing a ferry flight from Campina Grande (SBKG) to Recife (SBRF). During the final approach to runway 18 at Recife, the pilot experienced sudden physical discomfort characterized by stomach pains.
Due to this sudden onset of illness, the pilot elected to execute a missed approach and declared an emergency to Air Traffic Control (ATC). The pilot requested a new traffic pattern to stabilize their condition before attempting a landing. Following the maneuver, the pilot successfully landed the aircraft without further incident. After touchdown, the pilot received medical attention from the airport's on-duty physician and was subsequently cleared for duty.
The investigation
CENIPA investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the pilot's sudden incapacitation. The investigation determined that the pilot's gastrointestinal distress was caused by improper nutrition consumed several hours prior to the flight.
While the pilot's decision to declare an emergency and execute a missed approach was deemed a correct procedural response to prevent a potential loss of control, the investigation highlighted significant issues regarding flight planning and management. The investigation also revealed that the pilot was operating with a suspended Medical Certificate (CCF), though this was not a direct cause of the physiological event.
Findings
- The pilot's decision to proceed with a 35-minute flight without being physiologically prepared led to a condition that threatened to incapacitate the sole occupant.
- The physical discomfort caused increased anxiety and emotional distress, which compromised the pilot's decision-making process.
- Inadequate flight planning regarding the pilot's physical readiness was a primary contributing factor.
- The occurrence was driven by food poisoning/gastrointestinal issues.
- There was evidence of inadequate management oversight by the operator, as the pilot was permitted to fly while their medical certification was suspended.
