Propeller damage during taxi at Poitiers aerodrome

Casualties unknown • FR

A Jodel D 119 aircraft sustained propeller damage after veering off the taxiway during a maneuver at Poitiers aerodrome.

What happened

On Monday, November 15, 1999, at 13:30, a Jodel D 119 (registration F-PKMD) was participating in a local flight at Poitiers aerodrome. After receiving taxi instructions toward runway 03, the pilot proceeded to the mid-runway holding point. To perform pre-takeoff checks, the pilot oriented the aircraft into the wind.

Upon the pilot's request, the air traffic controller authorized the aircraft to line up on the runway and provided a wind update, noting a wind from 060 degrees at 20 knots with gusts up to 27 knots. The pilot expressed concern that performing a U-turn at the holding point would be difficult due to the wind conditions and decided to execute a taxi turn instead. As the pilot began taxiing a few meters to the left, the aircraft veered off the taxiway, resulting in propeller damage.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the taxiway because the pilot did not adequately account for the impact of wind gusts while attempting a turn.
