What happened
On 31 May 2008, a Jodel D9 Bebe, registration G-BGFJ, was conducting a private flight when it experienced a loss of engine power. The aircraft was on approach to land at a farm strip located at Tyndrain Farm, Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd, when the engine failed. Due to the loss of power, the aircraft landed on soft, 'soggy' ground. Upon touchdown, the undercarriage became bogged down, causing the aircraft to overturn. The incident resulted in one minor injury to the pilot, while the passenger escaped without harm. The aircraft sustained minor damage, specifically in the area of the cockpit's aft bulkhead.
The investigation
Following the occurrence, the pilot submitted an aircraft accident report. An examination of the engine was conducted to determine the reason for the power loss. Investigators identified a small crack located within the right cylinder head. The pilot had initially suspected this defect was the primary reason the engine ceased to function correctly during the approach.
Findings
- The engine power loss was attributed to a crack in the right cylinder head.
- The landing surface at the farm strip was soft and saturated, which contributed to the aircraft becoming stuck and subsequently overturning.
