What happened
On May 30, 2017, an Ikaramente C42 ultralight aircraft, registration OH-U398, was performing a local flight departing from Helsinki-Malmi. During the flight, while the pilot was reducing power to approach the airfield, the engine experienced a sudden malfunction. The engine RPM dropped, and despite the pilot's attempts to troubleshoot the ignition by cycling the magnetos, the engine lost all power and eventually stopped completely. The aircraft's electrical systems also failed.
Facing an engine-out situation, the pilot identified a nearby park in Laajasalo (Tuurholman puisto) as a potential emergency landing site. While attempting to maneuver toward a grassy area, the pilot was unable to lock the flaps in the required high-drag position. The aircraft ultimately struck a narrow, gravel-covered path. Although the pilot attempted to steer away from pedestrians on the path, the aircraft's left wing struck a tree, causing the wing to separate from the fuselage. The aircraft then impacted the ground on its left side, resulting in the total destruction of the airframe.
Both the pilot and the passenger sustained serious injuries. The pilot, who remained inside the wreckage, managed to assist the passenger out of the aircraft before being overcome by his own injuries. Fuel was leaking from the ruptured tank, creating a significant fire hazard.
The investigation
The investigation examined the mechanical state of the engine, the aircraft's maintenance history, and the pilot's emergency procedures. Investigators analyzed the flight path, the engine's failure sequence, and the functionality of the aircraft's ballistic rescue parachute system. The investigation also reviewed the response of emergency services and the adequacy of pilot training regarding specialized equipment.
