What happened
On September 24, 2003, at approximately 15:15 UTC, a Dyn’Aéro MCR 01 Club, registration F-PIUT, departed from runway 18 at the Autun airfield in France. The flight was a private mission intended to travel toward Poligny. During the initial climb, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 300 feet before entering a steep right-hand bank and stalling. Witnesses observed the aircraft in a nose-down attitude and a heavy bank. The aircraft subsequently struck the ground approximately 600 meters beyond the runway end and 220 meters to the right of the centerline. The impact resulted in two fatalities and the total destruction of the aircraft.
The investigation
The investigation examined the aircraft's configuration, the environmental conditions, and the pilot's actions. Investigators noted that the aircraft was operating at near maximum takeoff weight. The engine was found to be producing power at the moment of impact, and the flaps were retracted at the time of the crash. The investigation also reviewed the aircraft's equipment, noting the absence of a stall warning device. Meteorological data indicated a wind from the 050° sector at 10 to 19 knots, with gusts up to 20 knots, creating a slight tailwind component for the chosen runway. Witnesses and instructors also provided testimony regarding the aircraft's behavior during the takeoff roll and the presence of turbulence and wind shear in the area.
