What happened
A flight scheduled to depart from Irkutsk experienced a delay of several hours prior to its arrival at Kazashinskoye Airport. During the approach to runway 04, the crew encountered heavy fog and low visibility due to nighttime conditions. While at an altitude of 130 meters, the pilot began a go-around because visual contact with the ground could not be established.
During a subsequent landing attempt, the aircraft descended to approximately 10 meters before the crew initiated a second go-around for the same visibility reasons. The aircraft climbed to 400 meters and performed a 180-degree turn to attempt a landing on runway 22. While operating in weather conditions below established minimums, the twin-engine airplane drifted 1,100 meters to the right of the runway 22 centerline. The aircraft subsequently struck trees and crashed in a forested area roughly 3 km from the airport. The impact resulted in four fatalities (the pilot and three passengers) and 12 injuries. The aircraft was completely destroyed upon impact.
Findings
- The crew attempted to continue landing operations despite weather conditions being below visibility minimums.
- Poor visibility caused by night and fog led to multiple go-around maneuvers.
