Luton LA4A Minor nose-over during precautionary landing near White Waltham

Casualties unknown • Nr Village of Warfield, GB

A private flight involving a Luton LA4A Minor ended in a nose-over after landing in long grass while the pilot was attempting to navigate back to White Waltham.

What happened

On 26 June 2000, a Luton LA4A Minor, registration G-BBEA, was engaged in a private flight returning to White Waltham Airfield following a visit to Popham Airfield. After passing White Waltham with the airfield visible, the pilot chose to continue the flight toward High Wycombe to extend the duration of the trip. Approximately 15 minutes later, the pilot attempted to navigate back to White Waltham but found himself unable to locate the airfield.

In an effort to reorient himself, the pilot performed a precautionary landing in a field. After taking off again, the pilot identified that he was near High Wycombe airfield. While maintaining a magnetic heading of 180° from above the airfield, the pilot remained unable to find White Waltham. A second precautionary landing was initiated in a field. Approximately 30 metres after the aircraft touched down, it tipped onto its nose due to the presence of long grass. The pilot was uninjured, though the propeller sustained damage. Following the landing, the pilot shut down the engine and sought help from a nearby residence.

The investigation

Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the pilot's loss of orientation and the subsequent landing. It was established that the aircraft was not equipped with a radio or a GPS receiver. Furthermore, the pilot noted that the aircraft's compass was occasionally unreliable. Meteorological conditions at the time were favorable, with visibility exceeding 10 kilometres and no cloud below 4,000 feet.

Probable cause

The aircraft tipped onto its nose because it landed in long grass during a precautionary landing necessitated by the pilot becoming lost while navigating without radio or GPS assistance.
