What happened
On October 13, 2014, at approximately 17:00 local time, a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, registration LV-LXP, was performing a scheduled flight from San Fernando International Airport (SADF) in Argentina to Laguna del Sauce International Airport (SULS) in Uruguay.
While executing the landing procedure on runway 19, the pilot lost directional control of the aircraft. The aircraft exited the paved surface and entered the runway end safety area. During the excursion, the left landing gear impacted the ground, causing the aircraft to sustain substantial damage. The pilot was able to egress the aircraft unassisted and sustained no injuries.
The investigation
The CIAIA investigation focused on the sequence of events during the landing roll at Laguna del Sauce. The preliminary findings established that the aircraft departed the runway boundaries while attempting to maintain control on runway 19. The investigation confirmed that there was no fire following the impact and that the pilot's medical and commercial licenses were valid at the time of the occurrence.
