What happened
On 5 July 2006, a Mainair Rapier microlight, registration G-MZON, was conducting a private flight near Selby Home, Northumberland. After ensuring the passenger was briefed and secured, the pilot taxied to the start of the airstrip and applied full power. The aircraft lifted off at 50 mph and reached an altitude of 50 ft, but it was unable to gain further height.
Observing that the wind sock indicated an increase in the easterly wind, the pilot decided to attempt a turn to the right to avoid approaching buildings at the eastern end of the strip. During this maneuver, the aircraft entered a rapid descent and struck a dry stone wall. The impact resulted in serious injuries to both the pilot and the passenger, and the trike unit was destroyed.
