What happened
On July 16, 2009, at 17:03, an X-32 Bekas, registration RA-0462G, was performing agricultural chemical spraying operations near the village of Staroye Pogorelo in the Veshkaymsky District of the Ulyanovsk Oblast. The aircraft was operating from a temporary landing site located approximately 1.5 km northwest of the village. Prior to the accident, the pilot had completed seven successful flights that day. During the eighth flight, witnesses observed the aircraft performing a sharp left turn with a significant bank angle while flying at an altitude of approximately 20 meters. The aircraft subsequently pitched nose-down at a steep angle of 60 to 70 degrees, impacting the ground and resulting in a capsize. There were no passengers on board, but the pilot sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
The investigation
Investigators examined the pre-flight procedures and the aircraft's technical status. It was noted that the pilot-in-command did not perform preliminary or pre-flight preparations, and there was no corresponding entry in the preparation log. Additionally, no formal application for the use of airspace for these agricultural works had been submitted. The aircraft's takeoff weight was approximately 465 kg, which was within the maximum takeoff weight of 495 kg, and the center of gravity was at 30% MAC, within the permitted range of 29% to 39%. Before the final takeoff, a technician had verified that the aircraft contained 18 liters of fuel and 120 liters of chemical payload. No malfunctions regarding the engine, aircraft systems, or chemical equipment were reported by the crew or technician prior to the flight. Weather conditions were found to be favorable and did not present any obstacles to the operations.
