What happened
On the morning of February 23, 2017, the director of Aerodrome Khatyonki had planned a series of training flights to begin at 08:00 local time within G-class airspace. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, specifically low cloud ceilings, the scheduled operations were delayed. At 11:00, following an improvement in visibility and cloud base height, the commander decided to conduct a weather reconnaissance flight near the settlement of Khatyonki.
While one pilot was conducting reconnaissance in an RA-1963G, the commander prepared another aircraft, an NG-47 RA-1962G, for flight. During the engine warm-up process, a member of the Normandy-Neeman aero club occupied the right seat as a passenger, while the commander took the left seat. After the engine warm-up was completed at 11:15, the commander performed a takeoff and several low-altitude passes over the landing area.
At 11:50, during one of these passes, the aircraft attempted a turn at an extremely low altitude. During this maneuver, the NG-47 RA-1962G struck the ground, resulting in partial destruction of the airframe. There was no fire at the scene.
The investigation
Witnesses at the airfield assisted in evacuating the commander and the passenger from the wreckage and provided initial medical assistance until emergency services arrived. Both individuals were transported to the Kozelsk District Central District Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Kaluga Regional Clinical Hospital for further treatment. The incident resulted in 2 injuries.
