On May 29, 2016, a Pioneer-UT glider, registration RA-1486G, was participating in a demonstration flight program for the ceremonial opening of the Gavrilov-Yamskoy Youth Gliding School at Agat airfield in the Yaroslavl region. The flight followed an aerotow operation performed by a Vilga-35A airplane-tug.
Following the completion of basic aerobatic maneuvers, the glider was on its final approach to landing at approximately 09:55. While the crew was turning onto the landing course, the aircraft experienced a stall at a low altitude of approximately 40 to 50 meters and a low airspeed of less than 65 km/h IAS.
The aircraft, RA-1486G, subsequently lost altitude, causing the left wingtip to touch the ground and the nose to collide with the terrain. The accident resulted in injuries of varying severity to the glider's captain and a passenger.
The investigation noted that the aircraft sustained significant damage during the impact. The event occurred during a period where the investigation identified a lack of specific regulations for conducting acrobatic and demonstration flights for civil aircraft within the Russian civil aviation system.
