On September 2, 2017, a TR-301 aircraft, registration RA-40462, was performing parachute jump operations near the Turinskaya Sloboda landing site in the Slobodsko-Turinsky district of the Sverdlovsk region. The pilot-in-command had completed four takeoffs prior to the incident.
During the approach phase at approximately 08:51, the aircraft experienced an engine surge while the engine was at an idle setting. This malfunction necessitated an emergency landing. No injuries or fatalities were reported following the event.
Investigations revealed that the pilot had not notified air traffic control authorities regarding the use of Class G airspace, as required by Federal Aviation Regulations. Additionally, the aircraft did not have the necessary permit from the local self-government body for conducting flights over the populated area.
Technical analysis identified three potential causes for the engine surge. These included a deformation in a homemade engine control linkage due to manufacturing defects, fuel system clogging from contamination and corrosion caused by unapproved fuel, or the use of an engine that had exceeded its permissible preservation period prior to installation.
